The Static Mix Mini Course - Start Your Mix The Right Way
Your simple step by step guide to creating a solid foundation for all your mixes, leading to fewer plugins, faster mixes and a more cohesive and professional sounding final mix.
Before EQ or compression, there's balance. Learn the overlooked volume and panning skills that give your mix clarity and direction
Many mixers will start a mix and immediately begin trying to fix things with plugins and automation, never taking the time to get the balance right from the start.
The static mix process helps by giving you a clearer perspective, a top level view, right from the outset and offers a more focused approach to starting a mix, which will give you the best results on many levels.
Why this is the most important step in mixing...
The goal of the static mix is to make sure all the tracks are balanced and have a carefully considered position within the stereo field before you start adding EQ, compression, reverb, or other processing.
The benefit of having a solid static mix is that it informs you how the individual mix elements interact with one another right from the outset, so you can avoid confusion that leads to over processing your mix because if you do a good job with your fader balance, a lot of the problems you’d use plugins for simply disappear.
Tom B. Says...
"I have been through several courses before this one, but you are absolutely the best when it comes to explaining things. Been following along with the tracks in my own DAW. Looking forward to seeing you again and continuing the mix in the Indie Rock course".
Introducing: The Static Mix Mini Course with Sara Carter

Foundations
Preparation, gain staging, organisation, track assessment, phase checks

Workflow
Setting fader levels, mix level monitoring, metering, in-depth panning, movement, width

Signal Flow
Templates, routing, busses, the DAW channel signal path
Here's how this course will help you:
- Ensure that all audio tracks are set at an appropriate level before starting the mix, often resulting in the use of fewer plugins
- Listen and assess each track individually and adjust its volume so that it sits well in the overall mix
- Use panning to create clarity and prevent the mix from sounding cluttered
- Gain a greater perspective of how each track interacts before you start the main mix, saving you time and headspace
- Learn how to "read" the arrangement to make better panning choices
- Prevents any one element from overpowering the others, resulting in a more professional and polished sound
- Rather than using plugins to fix issues, you'll learn to limit yourself to the basic functions in your DAW to make things sound as good as possible
What students are saying...

Nice mini-course Sara! Thank you. I picked up a lot of good pointers, and made a note sheet to refer to in my process. Thanks so much!
Dave L.
Thanks for the course, its nice to know how some one with your experience goes about their craft. The course is worth every penny, and then some.
Taufan S.
Thank you Sara, this lesson really changed my perspective on static mix, I got what I was looking for all this time, it really influenced the mixing to the next stage.
Juha M.
This was an eye-opener for me. I had problems how to pan two different e-guitars and B3 hammond. Suddenly, there was separation and space instead of undefined wall of guitars and "foggy" hammond somewhere in between. Thank you so much for this video.

Stop guessing and start mixing with confidence — learn the balance techniques that give your mix shape, space, and impact.
You'll get the multi-track WAV files from the session to practise with in your own DAW.
I will take you through 8 lessons over 3.5hrs, showing you how to create a static mix that provides a solid foundation for further processing and mixing.

Thanks Sara, that's illuminated my interest in a static mix, most significantly the value of it rather than diving straight-in is massive.
Wolfgang F.
As always a great course, Sara! I really love the way you are able to explain the intention of why you are doing certain things and not just talking about the pure "mechanics".
Joe O.
Great course, thank you Sara. Everything explained very well. Looking forward to trying it out with the Multitracks.
Zoran H.
I picked this up as it was offered with a discount with my Classic Rock Masterclass purchase. What a gold mine!!! Thanks Sara

Out from all the online music courses I took so far, you are the best in explaining things. And, your soothing voice, makes it top notch. Even when you are doing a headphones review, it is a delight.
Peter F.
An amazing, precise, and clear walk through the static mix. I took plenty of notes for revision.
Thanks so much Sara.

Sara's demonstration and explanation about VU meters is absolutely great. Just seeing how calibration is set up - essential stuff - suddenly brings reality into focus. Thank you Sara.
Tom B.
Sara, this is excellent. So well explained. I like your philosophy of panning different things to different sides, rather than doubling everything in stereo.
