Most of us start learning to mix by focusing on tools. We learn what an EQ does, what a compressor does, how reverb works. And then we sit down at a session and we use them. Because that's what we've been taught mixing is.
But here's something that took me years to really internalise: the tools are not the skill. The skill is knowing what the music needs. And you can only know that if you listen before you act.
This sounds obvious. In practice, it's one of the hardest habits to build and one of the least talked about in mixing education.
If your mixes ever feel over-processed, or you find yourself tweaking endlessly without getting anywhere, this video is for you.
