You know when your bass sounds full and powerful in solo, then the moment the guitars and kick come in it either gets buried or turns the whole mix to mud? The instinct is to reach for the fader, but push it up and the low end fights the kick, pull it down and you're left with a hum you can feel but can't hear. The fader was never going to fix it, because the real problem is what's missing from the signal.
Most of a bass note's energy sits in the low frequencies, but what makes it identifiable as a melody rather than just a rumble is the harmonic content in the mid-range. EQ and compression can tidy up the low end, but they can't add anything new. That's where saturation comes in.
In this video I show you two ways to add harmonic content, parallel distortion and multiband distortion, plus the test I use to know when you've got the amount right.
